How our rankings and search results work
We use three separate systems. Paying us only ever affects the third, and it's always labelled.
1. Search results
When you search by location, "Best match" gives each place a score out of 100 using these weights:
| Signal | Weight | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Distance | 60 | Closer scores higher. |
| Menu completeness | 15 | Whether the menu has pizzas, depth, prices, and sizes. |
| Menu freshness | 10 | Whether the menu was updated in the last 120 days. |
| Verification | 15 | Whether the listing has been verified or claimed by its owner. |
Distance carries the most weight, so a new restaurant without a menu can still appear high up if it's close by. We don't use star ratings or popularity, because we don't currently have reliable data for either. You can also sort by distance, lowest listed price, or name.
2. Editorial rankings
Our "best of" pages are written by people. Each one explains how places were chosen, which sources were used, and when it was last reviewed. Restaurants can't pay to be included or to move up.
3. Sponsored listings
Restaurants can pay for a sponsored placement. These appear in their own slots, are labelled "Sponsored" or "Featured", and run for set dates. Payment isn't part of the search score or editorial rankings.
Hygiene ratings
Food hygiene ratings aren't used to order results. They're inspection results, not reviews, and a high rating doesn't tell you about the food's quality.
Price comparisons
We compare only the same type of pizza at the same stated size, and we only call a price the lowest when enough up-to-date menus can be compared. More about comparisons.
