Pizza Sizes Explained: From 7 to 18 Inches, and How Much You Really Get
Published 4 November 2026 · Updated 5 November 2026
A 12-inch pizza is 12 inches across, but what you eat is the area. This table shows how much pizza each size really gives you.
Pizza is sold by its diameter, the distance across, but you eat its area. That's why a small step up in inches gets you much more pizza.
Pizza sizes in inches and centimetres
| Size | In centimetres | Area | Compared with a 10-inch |
|---|---|---|---|
| 7-inch | 18 cm | 38 sq in | About half |
| 9-inch | 23 cm | 64 sq in | 81% |
| 10-inch | 25 cm | 79 sq in | The baseline |
| 12-inch | 30 cm | 113 sq in | 1.44 times |
| 14-inch | 36 cm | 154 sq in | 1.96 times |
| 16-inch | 41 cm | 201 sq in | 2.56 times |
| 18-inch | 46 cm | 254 sq in | 3.24 times |
To work it out yourself, halve the diameter, multiply it by itself, then multiply by 3.14.
What "small", "medium", and "large" mean
These words aren't standard. One restaurant's large can be another's medium, so look for the size in inches. If a menu doesn't state it, ask. We only compare prices where the size is stated.
How many people does each size feed?
It depends on appetite and on the base, as thin pizzas are lighter than deep ones. As one real example, Yard Sale Pizza says its 12-inch feeds one person and its 18-inch feeds two hungry people. Our guide on how much pizza to order for a group goes further.
Which size is the best value?
Usually the larger one, as the price tends to rise more slowly than the area. To check, divide the price by the area to get the pence per square inch. Our price comparison pages show this where restaurants state their sizes.
